Read This Before Your Next Cold http://www.baltimoremama.net/2008/10/249/ http://www.baltimoremama.net/2008/10/249/#comments Fri, 24 Oct 2008 22:06:04 +0000 Gretchen http://www.baltimoremama.net/2008/10/24/249/

When mommy is sick, well…too bad! There are no breaks with this job and it can be brutal if you are not on top of your game. But, there are few little things that can help if you come down with something. I encourage you to stock up now on these essentials so you are able to help yourself when that cold hits.

1. Rainbow Light’s Get Well Soon – where have you been all my life?! It usually best to take this one as soon as you feel any symptoms and it can stop a full on cold from forming. But, it will also help during the cold to alleviate symptoms. I am not kidding – you will notice that a lot of your symptoms just disappear – all hail Chinese medicine!

“Get Well Soon formula combines elements of two very effective, centuries-old Chinese herbal formulas-yin chiao and gan mao ling – with immune-activating nutrients. Designed for the Prevention and Treatment of Colds and Flu’s, It Delivers: Defense-Strengthening Support – from a potent blend of herbs including garlic, echinacea and coptis, plus high-potency Vitamins A, C and E and other nutrients important in supporting immune function; Symptomatic Relief – for easing sore throats (forsythia), clearing the sinuses and lungs (platycodon and licorice), cooling feverish heat (chrysanthemum), easing body aches (Chinese lovage) and expel/.//.,,ling toxins through perspiration (elder, yarrow and ginger).”

$16.95 for a 2-pack on Amazon, but, this is usually available at OK Natural and Whole Foods. (If you can’t get this brand, I also recommend the Oriental Herb Company Cold Snap.)

2. Neti Pot Flush your sinuses! It is recommended to do this through out the entire winter when your nasal passages are dry and more likely to become irritated. Try it with salt, too.

3. Kiss My Face Cold & Flu Moisture Bath & Shower Gel That nice eucalyptus scent really opens things up, plus a hot shower or bath will help stop the chills.

4. Angel Dear Robe And speaking of chills, this robe was the best investment. It is like a super blanket. I wore mine all week and it was especially useful surviving through the furnace needing to be fixed. Stay warm and cozy in this amazing robe!

5. And of course, plenty of these: Kleenex! And, just make sure you have the basics on hand: Tylenol, Orange Juice, and plenty of DVD’s for the kids, so you can get a little bit of rest for while they are being entertained.

Hopscotch Designs http://www.baltimoremama.net/2008/08/hopscotch-designs/ http://www.baltimoremama.net/2008/08/hopscotch-designs/#comments Tue, 26 Aug 2008 02:35:44 +0000 Gretchen http://www.baltimoremama.net/?p=49 Every now again in a woman’s life she will find a dress that just suits her in a way that is just impeccable. For a little girl’s dress, it’s not just about the fit, but, the details: the print and length, ruffles and collars, buttons and bows all coming together in a way that is bigger then an outfit. Usually less is more, but, it has to be done right.

Hopscotch Designs makes the cut with their Sophie dress ($35.99). The charming and simplistic apron style of the Sophie dress is versatile with it’s lightweight 100% cotton designer fabrics.  Whether it be a play date or special occasion, you know she’ll be the best dressed.

1950′s style aprons were the inspiration for these beauties (think “I Love Lucy”). I know I have seen several actual aprons for little girls and thought, “gosh if they would just sew it up the back- it would be perfect!”  But, that the Sophie dress is not the only product offered, there is also their signature Madigan dress (their first creation), girls separates, coats, boys shirts, and amazing quilts in many sizes.

Hopscotch Designs takes pretty and makes it prettier.

This mom owned company is run by two passionate and inspired moms who spent the first 5 years of their business selling at farmer’s markets, but, has since expanded into many boutiques across the US.

Farm Fresh http://www.baltimoremama.net/2008/08/farm-fresh/ http://www.baltimoremama.net/2008/08/farm-fresh/#comments Wed, 20 Aug 2008 06:47:06 +0000 vicki http://www.baltimoremama.net/?p=48 I love the farmers’ market. Especially when it gets to be late summer and just about everything in season is something I love to cook (and eat). The Baltimore Farmers’ Market is open from May to December, and while the early weeks focus pretty squarely on plants, and the latter weeks seem to feature almost exclusively tubers, roots, and people like my husband who really enjoy being outside in the cold, this is my time of year. So on those Sundays when we can (translation: when everyone has slept through the night, in their own bed, and someone [usually me] remembered to take cash out) we get our little tribe of epicures down to the market below the JFX. Inflation and gas prices have taken a bit of a toll on some of the deals [I paid about three times what I normally pay for cilantro], but this is still one of the best places in town for a good deal on some great produce.

In any event, we went on Sunday, and the market did not disappoint. Gorgeous grape tomatoes, which were promptly inhaled by my little girl, beautiful corn, early ginger gold apples, and something called patty pan squash. I’ve never had them, and had actually never heard of them before, but something about the color (sort of a limpid green) and the shape (a cross between a “fancy” votive candle, a UFO, and the kind of hat Afghan mujahideen wear) compelled me to plunk down my 50 cents (25 a piece) and try them. Of course, that day and the next one got away from me, so I haven’t gotten around to actually cooking them yet. According to the man who sold it to me, the best way to eat it is sliced and grilled with a little olive oil and salt.

Some tips for the Baltimore Farmers’ Market

1. Get there early (before 9 am is ideal, especially if you’ve got a stroller to maneuver).

2. Try to go completely around the market once before buying anything. Many vendors carry the same items (e.g., corn, tomatoes) and prices can vary by as much as a dollar or two between sellers.

3. Come with an appetite and eat while you shop: Cat’s Paw Organic has the best Snickerdoodles and black bottom muffins on the planet. And there’s no better way to start your day than with some sticky rice and a sliced champagne mango.

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Time! http://www.baltimoremama.net/2008/07/nordstrom-anniversary-sale-time/ http://www.baltimoremama.net/2008/07/nordstrom-anniversary-sale-time/#comments Fri, 11 Jul 2008 03:58:39 +0000 Gretchen http://www.baltimoremama.net/?p=31 It’s a great time to go shopping if you have the dough to spare.  The Nordstrom anniversary sale is when they mark down all the new, exciting stuff for a limited amount of time.  The sale officially starts July 18th, but, you can go preview it all in the back rooms with a store associate.  They will put what you want aside and then you come in to pick it up once the sale begins.  Lots of back to school shopping can be done, and there are always some Nordstrom exclusives being revealed, whether it be a diaper bag or cosmetics.

One more Nordstrom tip- if the line at The Rack is too long, you can go to the customer service area to pay.  But, you won’t have to worry about that next week because all the deals are upstairs.

It looks like a lot of what they have now is their own brand, but, they also have Dagmar Daley and a few pairs of Babylegs.

Blush Topless Undershirts by: Guest Blogger Candice http://www.baltimoremama.net/2007/10/blush-topless-undershirts-by-guest-blogger-candice/ http://www.baltimoremama.net/2007/10/blush-topless-undershirts-by-guest-blogger-candice/#comments Tue, 16 Oct 2007 12:52:00 +0000 Gretchen http://baltimoremama.net/?p=8

I know it sounds kind of kinky and you wonder who would wear these things, but let me tell you, everyone should. If you are anything like me and you pull your shirts, sweaters, tanks etc down every day then this is the item for you.

Blush Topless Undershirts are these long tube top looking things that actually are trapezoid shaped. You pull it on over you pants and under any shirt. What does it do? It gives you the layered look without having to wear another shirt underneath. It ends right under your bra and covers your back side pretty well.

I got these about 3 weeks ago and the amount of things I’ve worn it under is absolutely amazing. One of my favorites is the brown floral. I wear it under a ¾ length brown v-neck sweater and it is perfect for work. I never pull my sweater down in the back and the floral makes me look super pretty and put together.

Here’s the super bonus to these items: it flattens my mommy tummy. I mean who can complain about that?

They are also perfect for maternity. They work with everything when your pregnant and you don’t want your belly to show. I have to say that it’s an item I could’ve used when I was pregnant with my boys.

Don’t know what size to get? Stick with your normal sizing. They fit true-to-size and they have spandex for extra stretch. Oh and my last piece of advice, buy more then one you’ll find yourself wanting to wear them with everything.
