Watch dogs fly, Asian Elephants skip, hop, and groove and one courageous man stand eye to eye with a pack of powerful Bengal tigers. Circus celebrities help rev-up the motorcycle madness featuring one cycle on a high wire and seven speeding riders in a Globe of Steel. Play = Learning: How Play Motivates Children’s Academic and Social DevelopmentÂ
Speaker: Dr. Roberta Michnick Golinkoff, author of the award-winning Einstein Never Used Flash Cards: How Our Children Really Learn and Why They Need to Play More and Memorize LessÂ

ICAN of Baltimore has been around for awhile. They are a grassroots organization that supports women and families through all areas related to Cesarean births. They have monthly meetings and this month’s is a good one for all pregnant mamas, or those just curious about a future birth, or have had a c-section in the past. The topic this month is Meet the Doulas, Saturday, November 8th, 2008 10:30 A.M. at St. Anthony’s of Padua A repeat of last year’s popular meeting. DC and Baltimore area doulas will be invited to come and share info about what doulas do and provide ICANers with the chance to meet a whole bunch of potential doulas at one time. Last year we had several doula matches made at the meeting. I also promote this meeting as a chance for area doulas to network amongst each other since Baltimore doesn’t have a doula networking group.
The International Cesarean Awareness Network, Inc. (ICAN), is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve maternal-child health by preventing unnecessary cesareans through education, providing support for cesarean recovery, and promoting Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC).

]]>One of my favorite things about fall in Baltimore is the opportunity to celebrate our city and all of its glorious quirkiness through the many neighborhood festivals that take place almost every weekend this time of year. If you’re looking for something to do tomorrow, head on over to The Avenue for HampdenFest. This year HampdenFest promises a transformation that should deliver lots of fun for the entire family: new vendors, new music, new events, and an eco-lounge!

Sponsored by the Hampden Village Merchants Association, HampdenFest brings people from the local community together with visitors from all over the city and beyond to spotlight independent businesses, like Atomic Books, Ma Petite Shoe, and Mud and Metal, on and around The Avenue/W. 36th Street. HampdenFest also features tons of arts, crafts, and antique vendors as well as an Indie Craft Tent for local artists. Check out The Littlest Bean, Sweet Pepita, and Green Star Studio for great kids’ clothes, accessories, toys, and art.
Of course, there will be lots of yummy local food like B-More Alive Falafel and Brunie’s Bakery (yay for vegan treats!), and delicious concoctions from the beer gods at The Brewers Art. Three live music stages will feature local and national independent acts ranging from acoustic and folk to rock and punk.
HampdenFest will take place rain or shine (keep your fingers crossed for good weather) on Saturday, September 13 from 11 am till 7 pm. Â For more information, check out the HampdenFest website or call the HampdenFest Hotline at 410-235-5170.
