Holgate Toys Keeps it Classic

Sometimes the simplest designs are the most beloved.  Thanks to Holgate Toys, your children can enjoy the same wonderful, classic wooden toys that you (and maybe even your parents) played with.  Since 1929, Holgate Toys has been a premier maker of educational wooden toys from 100% natural kiln-dried hardwoods and non-toxic paints.  Made entirely in their Bradford, Pennsylvania factory, Holgate Toys exceed US safety standards and are guaranteed not to warp, split, or splinter.

The Rocky Color Cone was first designed by Holgate in 1938 and is still a favorite today.  The trademarked rounded wooden base adds another dimension to the stacking and clacking that kids love.  It allows the cone to wobble, spin, and topple, which elicited shrieks of delight from my eight-month-old daughter as the brightly painted rings spilled all over the floor.  Their website recommends ages 1 and up, but she gave it her seal of approval by choosing it first from her toy basket three days in a row.  (I’d like to think that she is drawn to the appealing, rich colors and the smooth, sturdy design that has already withstood a great deal of battering, but it might have more to do with the fact that the toy lets her play out her current obsession: taking things off/out of other things.)

The open-ended nature of the Rocky Color Cone encourages children to explore the various ways the materials can be used.  Little ones can spin the base on its own like a top, roll and slide the rings on the floor, stack the rings in different combinations, bang them against one another, compare sizes, and hone hand-eye coordination by putting the whole thing back together again.  And, because of Holgate’s concern for safety and durability, you don’t have to freak out when they give it the taste test.  (Your child has outgrown this stage, you say?  Then I guess you’ll never know what color of the rainbow is the yummiest!)

The Rocky Color Cone is 4″ in diameter and 5 1/2″ high and retails for $18.00.  There are also tons of other great educational and developmental toys on Holgate’s website.
